How to get the most out of a networking event with Ambition and AccountAbility
You’ll be surprised to know that networking comes in many shapes and sizes, it's likely already part of the role you play in your company within Finance, Technology, or HR. A networking event is no different, allowing you to have meaningful conversations with someone different, find mutual topics of conversation - be it professional or personal, and develop relationships which may go further than this networking event.
Did you know that 85% of jobs are filled through networking? It’s not just about who you know, it’s about who knows you.
The trick to networking events is knowing how to make the most of each conversation you have. In this article we’ll share simple, practical tips to help you walk away with value (and maybe enjoy the process along the way!)
Networking is a skill you can build. Start small, be curious, and remember - it’s about relationships, not transactions.
Reasons to network:
Growing your professional network with other people in similar roles or industries.
Meeting people outside of your organisation and being able to discuss relevant challenges and topics with a fresh perspective.
Unlocking opportunities – the ability to gain information that can lead to partnerships, referrals, or insights you wouldn't get otherwise.
Find people who may be able to mentor and even continue a relationship with after the event.
Conversation openers:
We have created a few ice breakers and conversations starters to help people ease into networking. Starting a conversation with someone you don’t know at an event like this can be as easy as asking them:
What brought you to this event?
Have you attended an event like this before?
Christmas is coming up, what do you have planned?
Maintaining conversations:
Asking open ended questions – much like in an interview, these keep conversations going and allow things to flow.
Listen more than you talk – the sign of a good interaction is someone who listens.
Question their answer – an effective way to keep the conversation flowing. E.g. “Interesting, can you tell me what you mean by that?
Finding common ground, be it work related, industry related or topics which are current such as AI.
Share value, not just your job title – topics that excite you in your industry.
Common mistakes to avoid:
Talking about yourself
Not asking questions
Jumping straight into jobhunting
