Career Insights with Ambition Episode 10 Mark Schiralli "Career Flexibility, Growth & Lifelong Learning"

Episode Summary:

In this insightful episode of Career Insights with Ambition, host Chris Crolla is joined by Mark Schiralli, Business Mentor and Founder at Own Your Mark, to discuss career flexibility, adaptability, and the importance of embracing discomfort at work and in life.

Mark's career journey started almost by accident. What was initially an opportunity to gain exposure and interview experience during high school quickly evolved into a six-year foundation in audit, accounting, and chartered qualifications. Although finance was not his dream career, Mark shares how the discipline and opportunities it brought ultimately opened doors that shaped the course of his career.

Throughout the conversation, Mark reflects on the importance of remaining curious and open to new challenges, especially when they feel unfamiliar or intimidating. After moving overseas and spending several years living and working across London, New York, and europe, Mark returned to Australia where his career took an unexpected turn. Transitioning from finance into marketing, sales, and emerging technology at Vodafone, he discovered the value of stepping outside traditional career paths and learning new skills along the way.

A key theme in the episode is overcoming procrastination and the power of taking small, consistent steps toward achieving career success. Mark explains how progress often begins simply by taking the initiative to say yes when motivation is lacking and task feels overwhelming.

The discussion goes on to explore the evolving role of AI and why foundational experience and critical thinking which contributes to real-world problem solving remain essential in today's workforce. Mark shares his belief that while technology can accelerate learning and access to information, genuine expertise is still built through experience and doing the hard work over time.

Ultimately, Mark's story is one of adaptability, lifelong learning, and building a life that satisfies your career goals as well as the things you intend to achieve outside of the corporate circle.

Mark’s Moment of Truth:

Mark reflects on a pivotal turning point in his career when he transitioned from finance into marketing and sales during his time at Vodafone. After years following a traditional accounting pathway, he realised he was no longer fulfilled staying within a single professional stream.

Although the move into a completely different side of the business felt uncomfortable at first, Mark embraced the opportunity and discovered new areas he could grow in beyond technical finance skills. The experience not only broadened his commercial understanding but also built up the confidence he needed to advance the consulting career he runs today.

“I always felt there was something more out there for me. Making that shift changed everything and opened doors I never would have expected.” – Mark Schiralli

Mark’s Words of Wisdom:

Drawing from his career journey across finance, consulting, sales, and leadership, Mark shares four key principes for long-term career growth:

1. Do the foundational work. Success is built through experience. The "boring" work early in your career often becomes the foundation for future leadership and decision-making.

2. Stay flexible and open to change. Some of the best opportunities come from stepping into unfamiliar territory and embracing discomfort instead of avoiding it.

3. Cultivate the habit of taking the first step. Overcoming procrastination often starts with one simple action. Progress builds momentum.

4. Build real-world experience through the adoption of AI. AI and technology are powerful if you know how to properly use the tools. Genuine expertise comes from experience and learning your way through challenges.

Curiosity and flexibility will take you much further in life than staying within what makes you comfortable.
