Bo joined the Finance & Commercial Team in Sydney nearly two months ago. In this short period of time, she has already shown she is a force to be reckoned with, billing a huge first month. We catch up with Bo to find out more and learn a little about her approach.
Tell us about yourself?
I’m originally from Melbourne and have moved around a lot, including living overseas in America. I love to laugh and have a rather warped sense of humour. I would always choose to spend my money on travelling than clothes or material things. Believe it or not, I started my career as a Primary School teacher, you think recruitment is tough, the teaching game is whole other stratosphere! I lasted two years before happily exiting that career. Outside of work I love furniture and design, animals and being outside - although I think I am one of the only people I know in Sydney who is not a fan of the beach! When indoors I like to binge on gritty Nordic or BBC series and eat until I hate myself!
What made you want to work at Ambition?
It was hard to resist a business which has 20 years' experience in the Sydney market but is not one of the large agencies that operate within business models that don’t appeal to me. The Ambition client base is huge, the culture is relaxed and Mark seemed like someone I could easily work with - and so far so good.
What is your approach when building relationships with your Clients and Candidates?
I build relationships with my clients by being authentic, treating them with honesty and respect through the lens as if they were a good friend. The other main way is to simply deliver, get the client a quality result, quickly. I also think being an expert in your specialisation and staying abreast of trends and market knowledge is essential to have credibility and avoid being viewed as an amateur.
What do you pride yourself most on as a recruiter?
My authenticity, sense of urgency and not being afraid to have difficult conversations to ensure I work with clients who value both my candidates and my own time. I work with clients who value a good process and are open to a more consultative approach as opposed to transactional.
You’ve really hit the ground running in your first month, what’s your secret?
My secret so far has been a combined effort with the team around me, a sense of urgency and hunger to succeed and have a good month. I will continue to search for unicorns and leave no stone unturned very tenaciously until I find the right person. Asserting control over the process, timelines and guiding your client is also very important.
What is your most rewarding recruitment story?
Any placement that has involved difficulty or felt impossible due to low salary/challenging client/location etc. and getting it across the line. The tricky roles where you have to shortlist several times and make you want to cry are the most rewarding.
When you’re not in the office how do you like to spend your time?
Wine is a very good friend of mine, I love wine, wineries, food, live music, exploring eating options around Sydney both cheap eats and fine dining and going away for weekends to Melbourne to see my nephew Jude.
If you were a city, which city would you choose to be and why?
Osaka in Japan. And why? The food is out of this world, the energy is electric, the people are some of the happiest and well mannered I have seen, and they have a super weird and eccentric side that contrasts the more traditional reserved nature of their people.
